There are numerous ways to explore a city with a guide. In order to put together a route and itinerary that suits you best, the desired duration and the means of transport are decisive.
A city tour by private car/minibus is the most convenient way to get to know the city and allows more time for walking at each sight. City tours on foot, on the other hand, are more focused on the selected districts, of course you can’t reach all the important sights in four hours on foot.
In terms of duration, one can say that the classic tours are four hours long. The time is long enough to visit several sights and parts of the city and small breaks are of course also possible. Four hours is not too strenuous either physically or in terms of concentration. Longer tours are of course also possible, but it should be noted that, for example, on a whole-day tour, the physical strain caused by the longer distances should not be underestimated. Incidentally, in Budapest the distances between sights are such that a guided tour only on foot is not really possible. So even with guided tours on foot, it is to be expected that we will use public transport again and again for some routes.
In the following you will find a small overview to make it easier to decide the basic question of the means of transport and the duration.
With guided tours by car/minibus you can get an overall view and orientation of the city very well. You can quickly reach each sights, where you can make smaller, targeted visits. On a classic city tour, for example, we do such stops with walks on Heroes’ Square, in the Castle District and on Gellert Hill
Of course, such a tour is physically absolutely not strenuous. The small walks together mean footpaths no longer than 2-3 km.
If you wish, a short coffee break is certainly feasible in terms of time.
With half-day tours on foot and sometimes with public transport, of course you can not reach all the main sights. Rather selected areas can be inspected more extensively and thoroughly. In four hours, for example, you can usually visit two of the following parts of the city:
- Along Andrassy Street with Heroes’ Square
- Jewish Quarter with the “Synagogue Triangle”
- Government district with St. Stephen’s Basilica, Liberty Square and Houses of Parliament
- Castle district with the Matthias Church and the Fishermen’s Bastion
- Gellért Hill with the citadel and the Gellért Bath
A half-day tour on foot is physically a bit more demanding, we walk about 6-7 km in this time. Minor inclines/stairs may also be included.
If you wish, a short coffee break is certainly feasible in terms of time.
With whole-day tours by car/minibus you can reach almost all the important sights. You get detailed information about all sights, at the end you have a complete overview and orientation of the city. Smaller and sometimes longer walks are possible in several places. Depending on your interests, interior visits are also possible, for example in St. Stephen’s Basilica and/or in the market hall.
Although the tour takes place by car, we obviously don’t sit in the car all day. So the tour means moderate physical exertion, about 6-7 km. There are no inclines to be expected, as the routes are covered by car.
A break for lunch and a small coffee break is timely feasible. Breaks are also necessary because, in addition to the physical strain, our mental capacity will also come to an end at some point.
The whole-day guided tours on foot and partly with public transport enable you to visit almost all of the city’s important sights. For example, due to time (and physical strain) we may skip Gellért Hill/Citadel.
A full-day tour on foot is of course the most physically demanding. The distances covered on foot can be up to 13-15 km long. Minor inclines/stairs may also be included.
A smaller break for a not too big lunch and a small coffee break is timely feasible. Breaks are also necessary because, in addition to the physical strain, our mental capacity has also come to an end.
I hope that I have been of some help in your decision. More detailed information about the different city tours can be found on the page of each program:
