EU citizens (including Norway and Switzerland) can use local public transport free of charge. This regulation applies to practically all public transport networks, to scheduled bus routes and trains throughout Hungary. All you have to do is present an identity card / passport with a photo and date of birth. However, there are some important exceptions or comments:
- In international travel, you must have a valid ticket for the entire route, including the section in Hungary
- For trains and buses that require a reservation and / or a surcharge, you must also buy a surcharge or reservation for domestic transport. (In the meantime, a small surcharge has to be paid even on numerous normal express trains and not only on intercity trains.)
- This discount is only valid in 2nd class
- The regulation does not apply to some special means of transport such as the funicular on Buda Castle Hill
- EU citizens over 65 years of age can also use the direct shuttle bus to the airport Budapest (100E) free of charge
- Citizens of Switzerland and Norway can also use this discount
