WHAT DOES PUBLIC TRANSPORT LIKE?
IS "BUDAPEST CARD" WORTH IT?
Public transport in Budapest is pretty good. In downtown areas there is practically no need for car. Compared to other big cities, prices are reasonable - particularly if you take advantage of the 24-hours, 72-hours or weekly tickets. Travel with a single-ticket is rather expensive as for each transfer you need to validate a new ticket - unlike in most European cities. However, within of the underground system the ticket is valid for a 60-minutes-travel during which you can change trains. You can buy tickets at any newspaper stalls, other season tickets can be found at larger intersections and subway stations at ticket offices.
There are ticket machines too, and gladly many of them communicate in English too.
It is important that for EU citizens, over 65, public transportation is free.
Budapest Card
Budapest Card is a clever invention. This helps tourists easier to get around in Budapest, as they can travel free on public transportation, they get discounts from many services and entering fees, even in museums, restaurants, sight seeing tours, etc.
So we can say that the card is worth for those who play upon the discounts eagerly. If somebody wants to use it only for public transport, then it is much better to buy a 72-hours-ticket.
There is a new opportunity for Budapest Card owners through the cooperation of a travel agency and the Budapest Tourist Office from January 1st 2010. This is a free downtown tour, on even days on the Pest, on odd days on the Buda side. The meeting point locates at the Sütő Street Tourinform office on the Pest side (next to Deák Square). On the Buda side meeting point locates next to the Matthias Church at Holy Trinity Square 6. Departure time is 10 am.
