THE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IS FREE FOR 65+ CITIZENS OF THE EUROPEAN UNION. HOW DOES IT WORK?
This regulation is practically valid for the whole country's public transportation. On City vehicles, regular bus services and trains you need to show your ID or passport. However there is some important information that you should consider:
For international travels discounts are not valid, not even for the Hungarian part of the travel. In this case you need to buy a valid ticket for the whole journey.
On trains with reserved seat tickets or excess fare (for example on inland IC trains, international trains in inland service) the discount does not exempt you from buying the reserved seat or excess fare ticket.
The discount is valid only for 2. class coaches.
It is not valid for special vehicles e.g. for Budapest Castle Hill Funicular.
